  • More Sharks Near SM?

    Jul 21, 2014

The great white sharks seen in growing numbers in Santa Monica Bay are not the typical "Jaws" of the Spielberg variety. Rather, most of the sharks spotted off our local beaches are less than a year old -- the equivalent of toddlers at an all-you-can eat buffet without supervision. They've been left by their parents to fend for themselves. The shark that bit a swimmer after breaking free from a fisherman's line on Saturday was one of these juveniles. As it turns out, Santa Monica Bay is an ideal...

  • Stoneware Yogurt Maker: Not For Novices

    Sabine Ganezer|Jul 21, 2014

I consider myself something of a yogurt expert. Present to me any supermarket shelf laden with a rainbow of yogurt cups made by various companies, each one boasting unique subtleties of texture, flavor, origin, or nutritional value, and in no time flat I will pick out the best brands based on my experience. Having bought enough yogurts to fill landfills with all those plastic cups, I was ready for something new and different. For a while now I've longed to be able to make my own yogurt. I...

  • "Sordid Lives" Relies on Themes Of Family

Beth Lindly, Special to the Observer|Jul 21, 2014

Local theatre troupe Kentwood Players' production of "Sordid Lives," a dark comedy penned by Del Shores, is a familiar, enjoyable piece of theatre. It unfolds like something I might have performed in high school, albeit more swear-filled. The acting was good in some parts. But this play's strengths don't lie in its artistry. "Lives" is ultimately a work revolving around themes of family and community, and every aspect of the production contributes to them. "Sordid Lives" is about a Texan family...

  • CONSIDER THE MATCH

    Jul 21, 2014

"Consider the Match," written and directed by Long Beach artists Maggie Boles and Katie Faris, is a series of vignettes tied together by similar themes. Making use of the absurd, surreal, and awkward, a small ensemble cast presents a series of comedic and dramatic situations. There might be blood. Probably not though. You'll meet Izzy and Rebecca, George and Justin. You'll meet Alf and Bert, Shawna and Raegan. You'll meet Reader and Stretcher as they form complementary parts and illustrate the...
