T-Level Industry Placements: A Win-Win for Students and Employers

We recently had a film crew on-site interviewing BGB Production Manager, Nathan Flower. The purpose was to promote the benefits of T-Level Industry Placements and the benefits to both the employer and the student.

"I see this as an aspirational pipeline of future employment..." commented Nathan, "...We've been working with Grantham College & University Centre for a very long time now and more recently seen the benefits of T-Levels and the young engineers it successfully produces."

Pictured alongside Nathan are current T-Level Industry placements, Javan and Young who are at the beginning of their engineering journey.

What Are T-Levels?

T-Levels are two-year qualifications, launched by the UK government in 2020, designed for 16 to 19-year-olds as a high-quality alternative to A-Levels and apprenticeships. They combine classroom learning with at least 315 hours (approximately 45 days) of industry placement in a relevant sector.

The Student Perspective: Gaining Skills and Confidence

For students, the industry placement is a crucial stepping stone into the world of work. Unlike traditional work experience, these placements are substantial and allow students to become a meaningful part of the team.

Key benefits for students include:

  • Real-World Experience: Students gain insight into workplace expectations, teamwork, and communication.

  • Skill Development: They develop both technical and soft skills valued by employers.

  • Stronger CVs: Industry experience makes them more competitive in the job market or when applying for university or apprenticeships.

  • Informed Career Choices: Placements provide a clearer picture of potential career paths within a sector.

The Employer Advantage: Investing in the Future Workforce

Employers across sectors — from engineering and healthcare to digital and construction — are discovering the mutual benefits of hosting T-Level students.

“Its a win/win situation. Lots of advantages for both employer and student - something we will certainly continue to support says Nathan Flower, BGB Production Manager.

Why employers are getting involved:

  • Talent Pipeline: Industry placements serve as a trial period for potential future recruits, reducing long-term hiring risks.

  • Fresh Ideas: Young people bring new insights, digital fluency, and a willingness to learn.

  • CSR and Community Impact: Supporting local education initiatives strengthens community ties and enhances the company’s reputation.

  • Staff Development: Mentoring students provides professional development opportunities for existing staff.

Support and Flexibility

The government provides guidance and toolkits to help businesses set up placements smoothly. Placements can be structured flexibly around business needs — whether block weeks or part-time over months.

Looking Ahead

With over 20 T-Level subjects now available, and more students enrolling each year, the scheme is poised to become a cornerstone of technical education in the UK. By participating, employers are not just helping young people — they are shaping a more skilled, workplace-ready future.
